Overview

Unmanned aerial vehicles demand motor control electronics that combine high power density, low weight, and reliable operation under rapidly changing load conditions. This project focused on the development of a compact sensorless BLDC motor controller capable of precise commutation without requiring dedicated rotor position sensors.

The solution combined a custom power stage with real-time embedded control software running on an STM32F303 microcontroller. Rotor position was estimated through back-EMF analysis, enabling efficient and reliable motor operation while reducing system complexity, cost, and weight. The resulting design provided stable sensorless control in a form factor well suited for multirotor and other lightweight aerial platforms.

Key Contributions:

  • Development of a sensorless BLDC motor control system for UAV and multirotor applications
  • Real-time rotor position estimation using back-EMF measurement and signal processing
  • Design of a compact three-phase power stage based on FDS6930B MOSFET half-bridges
  • Integration of MIC4605 gate drivers for high-speed MOSFET switching
  • Schematic capture and PCB design using Altium Designer
  • Firmware implementation on an STM32F303 ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller
