Overview

Visible Light Communication (VLC) enables data transmission using existing vehicle lighting systems but must operate alongside brightness and dimming requirements. This project focused on the development and validation of a VLC demonstrator implementing Variable Pulse Position Modulation (VPPM) for simultaneous communication and light control.

To accelerate development, the embedded implementation on a Renesas RL78 microcontroller was complemented by a cycle-accurate PC simulation environment for algorithm verification and performance evaluation. The resulting demonstrator provided a practical proof of concept and a reliable platform for testing VLC communication schemes.

Key Contributions:

  • Embedded implementation in C/C++ on a Renesas RL78 microcontroller
  • VPPM-based communication with integrated dimming functionality
  • Cycle-accurate PC simulation for algorithm development and validation
  • Verification of communication performance before hardware deployment
  • Demonstration of a complete VLC proof-of-concept system
